So many sunscreens on the shelf are packed with chemical ingredients that do more harm than good. Here's every mineral sunscreen, kids' formula, and after-sun product that's actually earned a spot in our beach bag.
Why I skip the Target sunscreen aisle.
Most conventional sunscreens rely on chemical UV filters like oxybenzone and octinoxate to absorb UV rays instead of blocking them. Those chemicals absorb into your bloodstream, and oxybenzone in particular has been flagged for hormone disruption and coral reef damage. I look for mineral sunscreens instead, the ones built on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sit on top of the skin and physically reflect UV rays rather than soaking in.

Here's what's actually in rotation for our family this summer.
My everyday mineral sunscreen.
Sun Cream SPF 30
Tallow-based and organic, this is the one I reach for most. Moisturizing enough to skip a separate lotion step, no white cast.
Reef Safe Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
98% organic, water resistant, and the one that comes with us on every beach trip. Broad spectrum without the chemical filters.
Also in the rotation:
- Primally Pure Sun Stick SPF 25, easiest one-handed application, lives in my bag
- Badger Mineral Daily Sunscreen SPF 30, lightweight enough for everyday wear under clothes
- Badger Zinc Oxide Face Sunscreen SPF 30, matte finish, no white cast on the face
- Sky and Sol Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, grass-fed tallow based, non-greasy
- Beauty by Earth Facial Sunscreen Serum SPF 30, matte finish for oily and sensitive skin
- Freaks of Nature Peak Performance Jumbo Sun Stick SPF 50, an easy no-mess stick for the whole family
- Freaks of Nature Solar Shield SPF 30 Spray, a genuine spray for quick reapplication
Tinted mineral sunscreen.
If you want a little coverage along with your SPF, these do double duty as a light tint.
Supernatural Radiance Serum SPF 30
A sheer, dewy tint with broad spectrum SPF built in. Wears more like a skin serum than a sunscreen.
Also tinted and worth a look:

- Rowe Casa Tinted Sun Shield, Code ANEESA, a good tinted option for face
- Crunchi Sunlight Tinted SPF 30, buildable coverage, no white cast

- Saie Slip Tint Dewy Tinted Moisturizer SPF 35, a popular pick for a "skin but better" finish
Sunscreen for the kids.
Mineral Kids Sunscreen Face Stick SPF 35
Travel-size and mess-free, this is what rides in every diaper bag and beach tote. 97% organic ingredients.
For full body coverage: Badger Kids Mineral Sunscreen Cream SPF 40, same clean formula in a bigger tube.
Lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas.
For the days I want something quick to rub in without the heavier cream feel:
- ATTITUDE Sensitive Skin Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, EWG verified, non-greasy
- ATTITUDE Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, vegan, water resistant up to 80 minutes
Two I've since moved away from.
Both of these were in our rotation at one point. A closer read of the ingredient list changed my mind:
- Babo Botanicals Swim & Sport Mineral Sunscreen Spray SPF 30, dropped this one after noticing added butyloctyl salicylate
- Thinksport SPF 50+, moved on due to added fragrance
Better, but not perfect.
DERMA E Mineral Powder Brush-On SPF 30 is a nice option to set makeup and touch up SPF over the day. It's a better formula overall, but it does contain phenoxyethanol, so I use it more as a top-up than a primary sunscreen.
My favorite helping hand.
Sunscreen Applicator
A refillable roll-on sponge that makes applying sunscreen to squirmy kids so much easier. No more sunscreen handprints on everything they touch afterward.
After-sun care.
For the days we get more sun than planned:
After Sun Balm
Thick and soothing for anything past a light pink. My go-to for actual sunburn relief.
After Sun Spray
Lighter than the balm and easy to mist on kids without a fight. Cooling right out of the fridge.
Also worth keeping on hand: Badger Organic Aloe Vera Gel for quick cooling relief, Beauty by Earth After Sun Cooling Aloe Vera Spray for a faster-absorbing option, and Tubby Todd All Over Ointment for soothing kids' skin after a day outside.
The bottom line.
You don't need a cabinet full of sunscreen. You need one or two mineral formulas you'll actually reapply, something for the kids that isn't a wrestling match, and a soothing balm for the day you get more sun than you meant to. Skip the Target aisle and start here instead.
