The non-toxic pillows worth the swap.

Non-toxic pillows

Pillows were the swap I put off the longest. They felt fine. But we spend a third of our lives with our faces pressed into them, and most conventional pillows are made of materials I'd rather not breathe in all night. Here's what I landed on.

If you only take one thing from this post: organic latex is my pick for a cleaner pillow. It's naturally derived, breathable, and supportive, without the polyurethane foam, flame retardants, and synthetic "fresh scent" fills hiding in most pillows on the shelf.

My pick: an organic latex pillow.

One thing to know going in: organic latex feels different from the cotton and synthetic pillows you're used to. The firmness reads differently. My honest advice is to size up on firmness when you order, the FIRM I chose actually feels closer to a medium once you're sleeping on it.

Organic Latex Pillow

Naturally derived, breathable, and supportive. Order a firmer level than you think you want, latex softens under your head.

For neck pain or side sleepers.

If you deal with neck pain or sleep on your side, I have to mention the pillow from Coop Sleep Goods. I'll be honest, it isn't marketed as the least-toxic option out there, but for actual neck relief it's the one that worked for me, and I think that counts for something too. You can adjust the fill to get the height just right.

Adjustable fill so you can dial in the perfect height. The one I reach for when my neck needs support.

The bottom line.

If you're going to make one bedroom swap this year, make it your pillow, you sleep on it every single night. Start with the organic latex if you want the cleanest option, or the Coop if neck support is your priority. Either way, it's a small change you'll feel within a week.

Have a pillow you swear by? Send me a note. I'm always testing new ones.
