Beet Juice

Beets are a natural source of energy. They can improve blood flow and circulation, especially during "that" time of the month. They support blood pressure, brain function, and cognitive performance, and they're loaded with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds.

I drink a glass of this every day I'm on my cycle and it genuinely helps with cramps and headaches. The ginger adds anti-inflammatory power, the apple sweetens it naturally, and the lemon brightens the whole thing.

I use my Omega cold-press juicer for this, slow-extraction keeps more nutrients intact than centrifugal juicers. Store the juice in glass carafes in the fridge.

— Ingredients

What you'll need.

  • 2 mediumred beets, scrubbed and trimmed
  • 2apples (I like honeycrisp or pink lady), cored
  • 2-inch piecefresh ginger root
  • 1whole lemon, peeled
  • 1large carrot, scrubbed (optional, adds sweetness)
  • Optionala few celery stalks for extra hydration

— InstructionsHow it comes together.

  1. 01
Wash everything. Scrub the beets and carrot well, no need to peel. The skins have nutrients. Just give them a good rinse.
  2. 02
Chop to fit. Cut the beets, apples, and carrot into pieces small enough to fit your juicer's chute. Peel the lemon (the pith makes it bitter).
  3. 03
Juice. Run everything through a cold-press juicer, alternating soft and hard ingredients to keep things moving. Lemon last.
  4. 04
Stir & serve. Stir well, the layers separate fast. Pour into a glass over ice if you want.
  5. 05
Store. Cold-pressed juice keeps in a sealed glass jar in the fridge for 2-3 days, but is most nutrient-dense within 24 hours. I usually juice for two days at a time.

Aneesa's tip

Don't be alarmed when your pee turns pink the next day. It's called "beeturia" and it's totally harmless, it means your liver is metabolizing the betalains. Some people experience it, some don't. Your body, your beet pigment.

Cheers to feeling better, xx Aneesa
